The Open Office Reimagined: Energy, Acoustics, and Brand
Modern IT offices demand more than rows of desks. Colour zoning, acoustic panels, and branded environments drive productivity and retention.
The open-plan office has been under scrutiny for over a decade. Research consistently shows that unmanaged open environments reduce concentration and increase stress — yet the format persists because density and collaboration remain valid business requirements. The answer is not to abandon the open plan but to design it properly: with acoustic control, spatial zoning, and a physical environment that reflects the organisation's identity.
At Servisol ITES, the brief was for a tech-enabled services workspace that could accommodate high-density IT operations while communicating the company's energy and ambition. The reception sets the tone immediately — a bold colour-block wall, a signature circular coved ceiling, and modular seating in accent tones signal that this is not a conventional corporate environment. Brand expression was a primary design driver from the outset.
Acoustic management in open IT offices is non-negotiable. The combination of multiple simultaneous phone calls, keyboard noise, and HVAC creates a cumulative sound pressure that directly impairs concentration. On this project, we specified flotex carpet across the workstation zones — a material that combines the acoustic performance of a heavy textile with the durability required for high-traffic commercial use. Acoustic timber slats at mid-height partition zones absorb sound without creating the visual heaviness of solid walls.
Colour zoning serves a practical function beyond aesthetics. By assigning distinct palettes to different work modes — focused work, collaborative areas, breakout — the space communicates expected behaviour to occupants without signage or instruction. The workstation floor is anchored by a tech-themed mural that reinforces company identity and serves as both a visual anchor and a wayfinding element for a space that could otherwise read as undifferentiated.
